Over the past few weeks, I have been mining IUCAT for materials already owned by IUB on the subject of calypso. I have been keeping a list of subject headings that are appropriate, browsing by those subjects, browsing by call number near other titles, and following some pretty winding paths from title to title to title. I have also been looking in the areas of music in Trinidad and Tobago, as some more general works deal with music but not specifically calypso. I have been printing all of the IUCAT records so that I can keep a notebook of titles. Since I have been printing everything that might even be remotely related, I have a lot of paper. But, I can go through the titles in person and weed some out. Better to trim than come up short. Who knew data mining could be so dull. Now I have more empathy for my dad.
