“Traveling exhibitions: providing endless cultural programming opportunities”

Goodes, P.A. (1999). “Traveling exhibitions: providing endless cultural programming opportunities”, College and Research Libraries News, v60n10, p. 835-8.

This article outlines the traveling exhibition program done by the ALA Public Programs Office. A discussion of the requirements and procedures for hosting an exhibition is included. The exhibitions are developed in collaboration with other institutions and are comprised mostly of images. The program suggests, however, that there be other events and collections developed to coordinate with the exhibition, and expand the opportunities for visitors to learn about and enjoy the theme of the exhibition.

The exhibitions must be free to the public, making them accessible to everyone, and staff must oversee the exhibition as much as possible. Other adaptations must be made for visitors with special needs. A certain number of libraries that have applied are accepted for the initial tour of the exhibition, and the costs are covered by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The author suggests looking around for other partners to add support for extra programs or events surrounding the exhibit, such as local humanities organizations, museums, or schools. By cooperating with other groups, more people can be reached by more opportunities.
