“My experience has shown that musical programs consistently draw crowds.”
Improving public relations is one of the most asked for improvements to boost the longevity and success of libraries. It needs to go beyond general public satisfaction, however. This can be achieved by creating attractive and enjoyable programming. As mentioned in the quote above, musical programs often bring in the most visitors to the library, especially if done as part of a series. A long term program can boost visitor numbers more often by adding several different types of programs, including book talks and art exhibits. Filling the library with local artists and scholars can build a sense of community for users and help out the local culture as well. The article also suggests making programs regular and consistent, so that coming to library programs becomes a habit for visitors.
