So, now that I have finished my readings (well, ok, most of it…. at least enough to be able to get into the actual cataloging of things) I have begun working directly with Sue in creating records. Starting with a few things from the frontlog that have existing records in OCLC that I can copy and enhance, we have been going through the records letter by letter and number by number, discussing what is there and why it’s good, as well as what is not there, why it should be there, and how to put it there.
Though I have done this type of work copy cataloging books and scores, I have found that the sound recordings format is exponentially more difficult, time consuming, and detailed. Sue is a wealth of knowledge, though. I am amazed at the way she can just outright tell you what AACR2r says about a certain element and cite the rule number without looking. I hope someday I can do that as well!
